Welcome to Rootin' Around, Kevin Roe's ragtag roots music review, surveying the best (and worst) of yesterday and today's country, blues, conjunto, juju, bluegrass, jazz, hokum, old-timey, ska, rockabilly, merengue, surf and kazoo band releases.
Be the first to tune in to the great old-time music streams curated by the good people at Dust to Digital, or zip back in time to Retro Rootin' to browse the moldy archive of Rootin' Around columns from the not-so-distant past.
As a result of our most recent obsession -- Brainerd, Kansas: Time, Place and Memory on the Prairie Plains -- the Rootin' Around bimonthly column ceased publication, after seven longwinded years, in early 1999. With this in mind, the hard-workin' Rootin' Around staffers made some tentative attempts to bring this site back to life, updating and expanding the once-popular Rootin' Links and Rootin' Bookstore sections and incorporating a few not-so-obvious improvements throughout the site. Why bother? Because we just can't sit still and let it gather dust any longer, that's why!
So, let us know what you think. And don't worry about offending us, our grandmothers or our two fan club members. We have very thick skins, thanks to our umpteen cross-continental moves and our lead author's long list of mind-numbing day jobs, still chronicled ad nauseum amidst the psychic sewage of Roto Rootin'.
If, by some stroke of good fortune or apoplexy, you are still a-hankerin' for more, thumb a ride on Rootin' Roadtrips, our tentative foray into the lucrative world of travel writing.
And finally, if you are still desperate for entertainment, we encourage you to get tangled up in the crabgrass-choked Roots of Rootin' to discover the dull but true story of why this column was ever allowed to publish in the face of such overwhelming public apathy.
